Pennsylvania Electric: One Program for Low-Income Residents to Cope with High Energy Prices
If you don’t take the time to research your Pennsylvania electric plan, you could be needlessly struggling to pay your energy bill each and every month. Sadly many low-income and/or credit challenged customers are unaware of the plethora of options available to help them avoid, for example, expensive prepaid electric service plans.
Following is one program that helps low-income residents save on their Pennsylvania electric bill each month.
The Low-Income Usage Reduction Program (LIURP)
LIURP helps low-income Pennsylvanians save on their electric bill by making energy efficient improvements to their residences. For example, storm windows may be installed, the home may get more (or proper) insulation; old appliances like refrigerators may be replaced with newer, more energy-efficient models, etc.
FYI, each utility company can decide – within mandated guidelines – which energy-efficient improvements they’ll make.
How to Qualify for LIURP
The program qualifies individuals based on annual income. For example, in 2008-2009, the income cap was set at 150 percent above the federal poverty level. This meant that the income for a family of four could be no more than $33,300.
LIURP is a popular program because it helps those who can least afford to make energy-efficient home improvements get them done. When you couple the savings provided by LIURP with choosing the right billing plan, the different in your monthly energy bill can be quite dramatic.
For example, if you’re on a prepaid electric service plan, you could save more by switching to a conventional plan. The reason is, prepaid plans bill per kilowatt hour (kWh) at a higher cost than conventional plans.
While you may pay 10 or 11 cents per kWh on a conventional plan, a prepaid plan could cost you 1113, 14 or 15 cents per kWh. Imagine the savings if you’re using 1,000, 1,100 or 1,200 kWhs per month.
So don’t delay. Make the call so you can start reaping the energy savings.
