What Is The Most Important Thing To Pay Attention To When Locking In An Electric Rate

This is the most important thing to know about before signing up with an electric service company. Sure getting locked into a rate that is much higher than you expected is not going to bankrupt you or me but for many people getting suckered into a falsely advertised electric rate is extremely stressfull.

Like many I don't like the feeling of being taken advantage of. One of the ways I have seen this happen most is when an electric company will purposefully leave off additional fees and charges that other companies pass through to them.

Tips on Energy Efficiency Measures for Your Home

This is normal in some states but in many deregulated electric service states there is an industry standard practice of informing customers of all fees and charges (even pass through charges) in the bundled in average rate being advertised.

This means that the disclosure is not just made in the legal "terms of service" but it is clear by being averaged into the big red colored advertised rate you see in posters, billboards, internet ads, and TV advertising.

The argument is made that this is the responsibility of the consumer to read the terms of service to see what extra charges are a part of the rate. In Texas the government sides with the customer if the advertisement is not clear and plain. So even if you are told that the electric rate has additional charges in the terms of service the electric company will still be held at fault if the consumer becomes confused from the advertised rate.

Another Way Electric Companies Like to Trick Customers

This tactic is not used by most electric providers but it is used by one downright dirty deceitful electric company and should be illegal. What this company does is advertise a variable electric rate at one price but than charge the customer a different price based on when the meter is switched.

So even though the customer sees one price in the advertisement they are actually charged a completely different electric rate than what they thought they were agreeing too. Sure if the customer had read every legal line item in the terms of service they might understand that the rate they would be paying is something different but why wasn't this made obviously clear in the rate advertisement as seen on TV, internet, and billboards?

This trick is also one you can easily get out of as well as receive a refund from the electric company. You will need to contact the Public Utility Commission but you should find it is easy to get out of false advertising like this.
