How Does Daylight Savings Time Help Texas Electric Service Customers?

Does Daylight Savings Time Really Help Texas Electric Customers Save on Energy?

Daylight savings time is not a recent phenomenon. It was first proposed by Ben Franklin in 1784. However, it wasn’t until the 20th century that it became uniform via theUniform Time Act of 1966.

But, does it help us to save on energy? The consensus among experts is mixed.

The Theory behind Why/How How Daylight Savings Helps Save on Energy

Daylight Saving Time (DST), in theory, makes sunset come later (by one hour). The idea is that Americans would use less electricity on things like lighting and household appliances.

While studies done back in the 1970s showed energy savings of about 1% each day of DST, this hasn’t held up over time. A 2008 study showed that energy use actually increased in some parts of the country (ie, Indiana) while DST was in effect.

One Sure Way to Save on Energy – No Matter What Time It Is

Conduct an electric service plan audit. What this means is to check to see if the type of electric plan you have is the most economical one for your budget. For example, if you’re currently using a prepaid electric service plan, it is almost certainly not the most budget-friendly option. Why?

Because these plans routinely cost more than conventional electric plans. That’s one reason they’re so easy to get.

If you haven’t checked for a while, you should know that conventional Texas electric companies offer more feasible options for customers on this type of plan, eg, the Texas LITE-UP Program. This program gives discounts to consumers from May through September on their electric bill. And, there’s no deposit.

If you’re currently using a prepaid electric service plan, contact your Texas electricity company and ask about options like the LITE-UP Texas program.
